Titanium has long held a distinctive place in watchmaking. Lightweight, resistant and capable of delivering outstanding performance, it has become a natural choice for timepieces with a technical and sporty character. It is far less common in an elegant watch, where the material's mechanical properties must meet a different set of demands: refined surfaces, precise contrasts between finishes, and geometries designed to interact with light.
It is precisely this challenge that shaped the development of Redentore Levius. The objective was to harness the qualities of titanium without compromising the aesthetic language of the Redentore collection, bringing a material known primarily for its performance into a more classical and refined territory.
A Material with Extraordinary Properties
Also known as Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5 titanium is an alloy composed primarily of titanium, with the addition of aluminium and vanadium. This composition gives it properties that distinguish it both from commercially pure titanium and from many of the materials traditionally used in watchmaking.
One of its most notable properties is its strength-to-weight ratio. With a density of approximately 4.4 g/cm³, Grade 5 titanium is, for the same volume, around 45% lighter than 316L stainless steel and 72% lighter than 18-karat gold. This substantial difference in weight is combined with high mechanical strength and excellent corrosion resistance.
These properties explain why titanium has become so widely used in sports and technical watchmaking. With Levius, however, the starting point was a different question: how could these qualities be brought into an elegant watch?
Why Grade 5 Titanium
During the development of Redentore Levius, the case material had to meet both technical and aesthetic requirements.
Lightness was the starting point, together with the ability to maintain rigidity and strength within a particularly slender case. At the same time, it was essential to preserve one of the defining elements of the Redentore family: the contrast between brushed and polished surfaces, used to define and accentuate the geometry of the case.
Grade 5 titanium offered this balance. When properly worked, it can achieve an exceptionally high level of finishing, making it possible to alternate brushed and polished surfaces within the same geometry.
And it is precisely here that the material's qualities also become the greatest challenge in working with it.

For our Master Watchmaker, working with Grade 5 titanium means taking on a very particular challenge. After years of experience working with cases in steel, gold and platinum, it is titanium's very resistance, one of its defining qualities, that makes finishing it considerably more demanding.

On Redentore Levius, brushed surfaces alternate with polished bevels across the case, while the bezel is entirely polished. Achieving such sharply defined contrasts requires exceptional precision: every step must preserve both the geometry of the case and the transitions between its different surfaces.
This is where titanium takes on a different character: its inherent properties remain intact, while the finishing gives it the character expected of a Redentore.
Redentore Levius: Lightness Takes Shape
The result is a case measuring 38 mm in diameter, 44.2 mm lug-to-lug and just 8.9 mm thick, crafted entirely from Grade 5 titanium and weighing only 12.9 grams.
Brushed surfaces define its volumes, while polished bevels and the polished bezel interact with light to accentuate its geometry. Its exceptionally low weight therefore leaves the aesthetic language of the Redentore intact, while radically changing the way the watch is perceived the moment it is held.
The lightness of the case extends to the timepiece as a whole: Redentore Levius weighs 40 grams as a complete watch head and just 48 grams including its leather strap. On paper, these figures describe a technical characteristic. On the wrist, their significance becomes immediately apparent.
With Redentore Levius, Grade 5 titanium finds a new expression within the collection: a material chosen for its lightness and performance, worked to convey precision of form and refinement of finish.
